The discharge of the rivers Spree, Schwarze Elster, Dosse, and Rhin is influenced by reservoirs. The Spremberg Dam (Spree), the Niemtsch Reservoir (Schwarze Elster), and the Kyritz Reservoir (Dosse) are used to retain floodwaters and to raise low water levels. The chain of lakes on the Rhin (Rhin reservoirs) is used to maintain low water levels in navigable waterways and to provide water for agricultural irrigation.
